The
Property: Menerbes
is one of the most charming historic hilltop villages in Provençe.
The setting for the book and TV series "A Year in Provence",
the village lies in the heart of the Luberon Natural Park,
just half an hours´ drive from the Medieval City 0f
Avignon.
The house is situated
in a quiet street, across the road from a gardens with cherry,
apricot, plum, pear and fig trees. The house is three hundred
years old, and has been lovingly restored and modernized without
losing any of its charm and character.
The property consists
of two ancient stone buildings on either side of a magical
internal courtyard where you can eat al fresco at the large
round table. Above this courtyard is a colourful mature terraced
garden, with stone steps winding up to the swimming pool.
This is situated above the house and enjoys magnificent panoramic
views over the rooftops and right across the Luberon Valley.
The
pool has plenty of seating all around it and a small poolhouse.
The main house
has a spacious living room on the ground floor with a beautiful
stone vaulted ceiling. On the next floor is a double
bedroom with a wood-beamed ceiling and a bathroom with shower
next door to it. A few steps up from this is a second sitting
room with a large TV and video. At the top of the house is
the extremely spacious master bedroom (approx 40 square metres)
with high beamed ceilings and a luxurious ensuite bathroom
with natural stone flooring and a large Roman style bathtub.
This bedroom boasts views across the valley on one side, and
on the other a balcony looking over the terraced garden. On
moonlit nights the moonbeams stream in, making it extremely
romantic and heavenly!
On the other side
of the courtyard is a converted stable block with the dining-room
and fitted Gaggeneau kitchen on the ground floor,
and two further bedrooms and a bathroom on the floors above.
Throughout, the
original character of the house has been preserved, with ancient
stone stairways, iron railings, traditional wooden
shutters, and other charming features of historic Provence.
But the kitchen and bathrooms are fully modernized, the pool
has an automatic cleaning device, and throughout the interior
is hung with a variety of beautiful fabrics and numerous interior
design features from fittings to furnishings.
Across the street
is the breakfast terrace which sits in the midst of cherry,
apricot, plum, pear and fig trees. There is a garage plus
off-street parking for 2 more cars. The house is in an extremely
peaceful spot, but it is just a minute's walk from the heart
of the
village with its bakery for fresh croissants in the morning,
its cafes and its charming shops.
