The Property: In the natural beauty of the south of the Ruhr-metropolis Essen our apartment “Ruhr-Refugium” is situated in the calm basement of the small villa (built in 1936) of a former director at Krupp.The unusual construction of the apartment is due to the fact that it was the former living place of the owner’s housemaid.

The individual entrance leads from a mini hall to the large living room whose window faces the garden and the forest. The guest finds a sofa with table in front, a dining table with two chairs, an extensive library, cable TV, radio, VCR and DVD, tea/coffee machine and a cupboard with dinner service, iron etc.

Some steps lead to the toilet with sink and the separated and soundproof bedroom offering besides 2 separate beds sufficient space for clothes etc. The window looks to the garden. For the former maid a small room was added at a later date in which you find a mini kitchen (including kitchen utensils) with sinks and – extremely unusual – a shower separated by a curtain.

Its location is near the town centre, 5 minutes on foot to the station of Essen-Stadtwald and another 5 minutes ride by train to the main station offers mobility without a car.The local train in the opposite direction takes you to Düsseldorf in 45 minutes. The international airport of Düsseldorf is nearby (20 minutes by car).

Extra information: In the kitchen there is an oven, refrigerator and kettle. In the main bathroom there is a hair-dryer, hot water and kitchen-towels. In the second bathroom there is a shower, towels and a wash basin. Bed linen is provided.

For entertainment there is cable/sat TV, a DVD-player, CD-Radio, stereo system, a VCR and an international library.

Activities in the area include: biking, hiking, horse-back riding, jogging, miniature golf, tennis and water sports.

Location: A 4 minute walk from your apartment (called by our English customers “Krupp’s corner” because its garage was rented by the Krupp tycoon Beitz) you enter into the forest (Stadtwald), which you can pass through to come to the legendary “Baldeneysee“ and the famous restaurant “Heimliche Liebe“ (secret love) in 20 minutes. Furthermore Villa Hügel with its famous exhibitions is only a few minutes distance (by car or bus) from the Stadtwaldplatz, which is a 5 minutes walk from the apartment and offers various shops and restaurants.

The fair centre of the Gruga and the famous Grugapark, but also the Folkwang- and Ruhrland museum can be reached by public transport in 10 to 15 minutes. By means of the really cheap and dense public transport system you can comfortably reach the towns of Bochum (Starlight Express), Duisburg (port and zoo), Gelsenkirchen (Schalke), Oberhausen (Centro) and Dortmund (breweries) in less than 30 minutes.

The “Ruhr- Refugium” is the ideal starting point to reach the lively and ethnically diverse scenery by public transport, which is unique in Europe. (Proposals for tours are available or at

Our foreign guests on discovery in Germany reach towns worth seeing like Düsseldorf, Münster, Köln or Aachen, from where the Dutch or Belgian borders are at eyesight within an hour’s ride by car. The “land of the 1000 mountains” (Sauerland) or the Münsterland in the north are worth a detour. The train connections from the main station of Essen offer the best conditions for a trip to Amsterdam or Bruxelles.
