Top
two floors of a 12th Century castle tower. Panoramic views.
Massa Martana, Todi area, Umbria, Italy
The
Property: Villa San Faustino castle was built in the 11th
or 12th Century, old even by Italian standards. Our apartments
are in the main tower, a solid and noble south facing building
with spectacular views over a fertile valley of sunflowers,
vineyards and olive groves. Garden space is set aside for
guests to relax in. Despite its many attractions this area
is thankfully still off the main tourist trail. The numerous
excellent eateries that abound in this area are frequented
mainly by locals and in-the-know Romans. Villa is easy to
get to and handily central for making trips from.

Location:
Villa San Faustino boasts its own mineral water and olive
oil. Other local delicacies include truffles and wild boar.
The wine is good, both white and red. Many of the surrounding
restaurants are "agriturismi" - farmhouses where
much of the food served is grown on site. We have a large
organic vegetable garden, part of which is given over to growing
old varieties in danger of extinction. Guests can usually
obtain fresh produce from us.
Tourists
are a rarity and are treated with warmth. The sixty or so
local inhabitants are proud of their well-preserved hamlet
and pleased when others appreciate it. The pace of life is
slow and sense of community strong. There is plenty to see
just wandering around on foot , from beautiful countryside
to ancient churches. Relax, sample another way of life and
forget about the world of stress beyond.
Most of
Umbria's places to visit are less than forty minutes away
by car. Perugia, Spoleto, Orvieto and Todi to name but a few.
Dance, music and food festivals are regular events, and range
from the world famous to small village affairs. Three lakes
are within easy driving distance. Rome is near enough for
a day trip, and if you don't want to travel everywhere by
car, Massa Martana station is a ten minute walk.
